Resistance is often understood as a client’s reluctance to change, lack of motivation, avoidance, or failure to follow through. From an Advanced Applied Neuroscience (AAN) perspective, however, resistance is something more specific: an ineffective response pattern to emotional discomfort. This workshop introduces experienced coaches to a neuroscience-based framework for understanding why clients get stuck, especially when insight, motivation, and desire for change are already present.

Participants will explore the difference between immediate threat responses associated with the amygdala and uncertainty-related threat responses associated with the BNST. They will learn why many forms of resistance are not simply cognitive blocks or motivational issues, but learned patterns shaped by past experience, meaning-making, and the client’s relationship with unpleasant emotions. The workshop will help coaches distinguish the client’s surface narrative from the deeper pattern of how the client interacts with emotional discomfort, giving them a more precise and practical lens for supporting difficult change.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define resistance from an AAN perspective as an ineffective response pattern to emotional discomfort.
  • Distinguish between immediate threat responses and uncertainty-related threat patterns that may block transformation.
  • Identify why clients can be highly motivated to change while still remaining stuck in reinforced emotional-response patterns.
  • Recognize how past experience, meaning-making, and learned responses to discomfort shape client resistance.
  • Apply a practical coaching lens that separates the client’s narrative from the client’s relationship with emotional discomfort.

Key Takeaways.

Participants will leave with:

  • A clearer neuroscience-based definition of resistance.
  • A distinction between “resistance to change” and resistance created by learned patterns of responding to discomfort.
  • A deeper understanding of why insight alone often does not create sustainable transformation.
  • A practical question they can begin using immediately: How is this client interacting with emotional discomfort?
  • A more precise way to listen beneath the client’s narrative and identify the patterns that may be blocking change.

About the Presenter:

Reut Schwartz-Hebron is the founder of KCI (Key Change Institute) and a neuroscience-based coach educator specializing in difficult change, resistance, and transformation. Through her Advanced Applied Neuroscience Coaching programs, she has trained and certified hundreds of experienced executive and life coaches. Reut’s work brings together the neuroscience of threat, emotion, and transformation to help experienced coaches better understand why clients get stuck, why insight alone often fails, and how learned subconscious patterns of responding to emotional discomfort can block meaningful change. Her teaching offers a practical neuroscience lens for distinguishing the client’s surface narrative from the deeper patterns that shape resistance, adaptability, and sustainable transformation.
